Not a great week to be a Republican

So, let's sum it up....

John McCain's pick for Vice President is someone who:

  • Used of the office of governor to carry out a personal vendetta, fired a high level state official for legally and appropriately standing up to her, then lied about it.

  • Is a social conservative whose 17-year-old, unmarried daughter is pregnant.

  • Wants creationism taught in the public schools.

  • Thinks the Pledge of Allegiance was written in the late 1700s.

  • Is connected to a political party in Alaska that wants that state to secede from the United States.

Hey, Republicans, don't forget that, technically, she isn't the VP nominee yet. It's not too late to give Mitt a call.

On the subject of the GOP convention, let's not let this fall down the memory hole:

That's Stuart Shepard of James Dobson's Focus on the Family urging Christians to pray for "torrential" rain during Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention last week.

Now that Hurricane Gustav is leading the Republicans to cancel part of their convention, should we file this under "Irony"? Or, perhaps, Christians who fell for this ought to mark this as a lesson in humility and keep their mouths shut next time an evangelical preacher tells them what to pray. Read Matthew 6:5-15.

I subscribed after the OJR was dropped by USC. I thought Sensible Talk was about journalism. What a disappointment to see it join the hate and distort brigade. Then again, maybe it is about journalism. And I'm no fan of McCain or the Republicans.

Where is the hate and distortion here?

This is very much about journalism - which highest calling is to identify the corrupt, the dishonest, the hypocritical, the ignorant and the dangerous, ideally *before* they have a chance to come to political power.

Obama, McCain, Biden and Palin deserve tough, honest, scrutiny by journalists before November. Three of those four have endured that. Now, it is the fourth one's turn. And, at this point, Ms. Palin seems to be failing miserably. It's good journalism to say that. It's bad journalism to ignore it.

I've been reading your blog since before USC dropped it, and I do enjoy reading it.

All good points about Palin, but I do have one bit of criticism. In the poll you reference with a question about the Pledge of Allegiance, the question had to do with "Under God," not when the Pledge was written. They are two dates separated by about 62 years. It's pickyuny, I realize, however when pointing out the flaws, it's probably a good idea to point out the flaws accurately.
Thanks for the good read, though!

The problem with the Pledge thing was Palin's answer - specifically her reference to the founding fathers, with the implication that they had a role in the crafting of the Pledge, which was written many, many years after the last signers of the Declaration had died. That's what I was pointing out.
